For a number of years I’ve been trying to walk my usual path down past the “horse area” and back to count the number of trees with red leaves on Aug 31, Sep 30 and Oct 31. You can see a real change over the years with the number of trees that were all or nearly all red and those that had some red/yellow leaves.
This year I did the walk without a dog for the first time; it still feels strange to walk out there by myself. I feel like an interloper or weirdo just crusing the road. Fortunately, I don’t pass any occupied residences. Anyway, on Sep 2 only 4 red trees and 8 others that had substantial coverage; very few (another 14) with any red at all. 10 years ago that would have been triple.
We’re not looking at any frosts over the next 2 weeks so I expect end of September will be different; although it’s interesting to note the difference in just one week. It might be that we’re delayed a week or 2 overall as summer extends longer and fall is warmer than it used to be.
