Walking to do bulbs

Over the last few years we’ve been very aggressive planting naturalizing bulbs in spots around the yard and in the “SOG” (Side of Garage) garden. The SOG was a total mess but during COVID times we took the days needed to clean it out. The soil is awful but we’ve been mulching it. We treat it as a spring garden and then just put shade perennials in there to enrich the soil, waiting for next spring.

Planting bulbs is a massive undertaking around here, because you can’t just dig a 4′ trench 6″ deep without hitting tree roots and rocks. So it’s back and forth to the garage, lower garage, get a bigger shovel, etc., move on to the next spot, repeat. Go get more soil from the car. We planted about 400 bulbs on recent weekend and it got almost 15,000 steps just around the property. It’s not necessarily a “Walk” but it sure involves a lot of walking. And you do get to know the subtle differences in the area really well.
