Short Walk

First time in a while that I’ve posted. Haven’t done a lot of road walking this year. Mostly, Dee’s legs are hurting and it’s hard to go out. Also, the year has been so wet that the bugs are terrible in the woods. Mostly, though, it was due to Appa’s failing health. We used to walk together in the evening for her exercise, but I don’t think we did one this year even in the late Spring.

By summer, Appa was way too weak to walk on a leash; she could barely get out to the back yard and into the house. But in early September she took a sharp downturn and we knew it was time.

The “short” walk was from our car to under a little apple tree at the vet’s. It was nice that we could help her along under an apple tree. She had a little meal (the vet’s lunch, I think) kind of laying down while the first shot was taking effect. I know she could smell the fallen apples and would have loved to eat one. As she got less responsive Dee moved around to where Appa could see her and Dee could see Appa. The final shot goes very quickly; and Appa ran out to the soccer field in Shoreham, waiting for me to kick the ball but pushing it with her nose till I get there. And then she’s on a couch where no dogs were ever allowed, waiting for Dee to “get to work.”

I took Louisa for a walk the other day. But she far prefers to chase a ball.
