So, a couple of days after Christmas, Dee decides that we’re going to take a walk up Poor Farm Rd (North) in Thetford. There’s a permanent house up there now, and the bottom of the road was plowed and sanded…a tricksy bluff if I ever lived through one.
The way is uphill all the way, around a steep curve from the driveway to the house there were signs of sheer ice on the path. We were able to pick our way up on some snow in the middle. When we passed the house, we could see the residents were leaving for the weekend, as the weather was supposed to be pretty bad the next day. We walked on up another 3/4 of a mile, passing a lot of surveyor tape on the east side. Strangely enough, we were walking directly into the sun at noon, so the road turns south without being obvious about it.
All the way up we were following one set of footprints that never returned. Someone went all the way through to Tucker Hill Road, I guess, because there are no houses up the top of the hill. The road is passable by truck but you couldn’t get two vehicles past each other. In one spot the banks of the road are 4′ above the road surface. In those spots the tracks had melted out in the warm weather so there was dirt to walk on.
However, I was justifiably worried about the way back. Dee had to slide down on her butt for about 100 feet but was very happy about it. Once we hit the sanded part we could take steps longer than 6″. I basically shuffled my way down all the way back to the car. Crazy, but lots of fun. Dee loved it.
